Dear All,
Your child would have brought back a sheet of paper with 'Basic Sight Words' and '100 High Frequency Words' on it. They have pasted it at the back of their Word bank Book. I have gone through these words with the children in class already and will continue to quiz them from time to time. Please go through the list regularly with your child. I hope that they will be able to recognize and pronounce the words by the end of term 1.
What exactly are "basic sight words?"
These are words that good readers may instantly recognize without having to "figure them out." There are two reasons why sight words are an essential component of good reading. First of all, many of these words do not sound like their spellings might suggest, so "sounding them out" would be unproductive. Also, a good reader really can’t afford the time to dwell on too many words, or he may lose the speed and fluency necessary for determining the author’s message.

High frequency words are the words that appear most often in printed materials. Learning to recognize high-frequency words by sight is critical to developing fluency in reading.
