Wishing All a Happy and Prosperous New Year!
I hope everyone is in good health and happily visiting family and friends. For the past weeks, the kids must have brought home pictures of CNY goodies, lion dances, lanterns and couplets to colour. I am sure that some must have pestered or requested you to make lanterns and lucky fishes for our class decorations. I must say that I am extremely grateful to everyone and the kids who have put in utmost effort to prepare resources for the CNY decorations.
Even so, on CNY celebrations day, some of them even brought sweets, candies and crackers to share with the class. I am deeply touched by your generosity and big hearts.
Happy New Year and Gong Xi Fa Cai!
Audiometry and Immunisation
the kids have finally been immunised. They have been asking me whether it's painful or not and how it may feel like. Their audiometry and immunisation sessions were pushed forward a day earlier as classes 1B and 1D were checked off the list due to chicken pox infection among some of the children there.
Of course, the change in dates took the kids by surprise but they were brave and fearless[well..almost] nevertheless. Almost all didn't cry and even if they did it was just for a while! By the day's end, they were feeling happy and forgot all about the pain and sour medicine when they played 'Blow Wind Blow!' during PE. Here, I have created a slide show of them during the 2 days.Hope you enjoy it.

Spelling, Mental Sums, Word Bank Book, Journal and Letter Box
you should be informed by now that Spelling is on Mondays and Mental Sums is on Fridays [unless stated/updated otherwise].
Spelling
The first Spelling was on 29th January with most pupils scoring full marks. Every child that scored full marks was rewarded with a sweet. Those who did not have to do corrections. They are to rewrite the same word that was spelt wrongly as many as three times on the next page. Pupils who score full marks for 4 out of 6 Spelling exercises will be given a'bigger' reward. Spelling will be sent home for signing on Monday itself, if not latest by Tuesday.
Mental Sums
The pupils should have finished with their 3rd Mental Sums last Friday. Each Mental Sums will consist of 5 questions read out by the teacher at least 2 times before moving on to next question. Pupils will have to attempt each question mentally and refrain from writing any of the questions down. This exercise aims to sharpen pupils' alertness and thinking skills within a limited time period. Of course, pupils will be asked questions based on a topic which they are learning or have learnt. The questions will be read out once again after the 5 questions are done for the purpose of checking. The Mental Sums will be marked and I will attach a piece of paper with the questions for your perusal and your child's revision. Corrections can be done on the piece of paper attached or by the side of the mistake; indicated by a bracket. Mental Sums Book will be sent home on Friday itself, if not latest by Monday.
Word Bank Book
This book is to hold words that coincide with the phonics that the pupils learn from the English Activity Book at the end of each unit. At the end of each unit, the pupils will learn beginning and ending sounds. After learning the sounds, we will use this book to note down the words that start or end with the sounds. These words are useful when doing Written Expression or writing. For every sound learnt, we will do one page in class while children are encouraged to look for more words at home to fill up another page of the same sound.
Journal
This book [jotter book] is to hold thoughts and ideas the kids have. It keeps them occupied constructively while waiting for friends who are not done with their work. I use this book as a tool to start them reflecting about their day's events and the people around them. Hopefully, this culture of reflecting will be instilled in them and they will love writing and expressing themselves. I try my best to read through their journals and give my 2 cents worth.
Letter Box
I have an new letter box that I have placed in class. I put this up so that the kids can send letters to me, letters that only I can read. Kids like sharing secrets and I hope that this simple act will bond me and the kids further. I'm looking forward to reading those letters.
P.S. Please teach your kids to draw a margin especially for Spelling and Mental Sums. Some children have managed to do it but some still have difficulty.
Health Checks and Immunisation
The School Health Services will be in our school in February and there will be 2 health checks for your child. By now, you would have received 2 forms and a letter.
Please complete item 1 and 2 and return them with your child's Health Booklet to me by 7th Feb, Wednesday.

The dates of the health checks are as follows:
13th February, Tuesday [Audiometry]
14th February, Wednesday [Medical Examination+ Immunisation].
Please ensure your child is in PE attire (shouldn't be a problem since there is PE on both days).
I hope there will be full attendance for both days as far as possible. Thank you.

Learning Basic Sight & High Frequency Words
Your child would have brought back a sheet of paper with 'Basic Sight Words' and '100 High Frequency Words' on it. They have pasted it at the back of their Word bank Book. I have gone through these words with the children in class already and will continue to quiz them from time to time. Please go through the list regularly with your child. I hope that they will be able to recognize and pronounce the words by the end of term 1.
What exactly are "basic sight words?"
These are words that good readers may instantly recognize without having to "figure them out." There are two reasons why sight words are an essential component of good reading. First of all, many of these words do not sound like their spellings might suggest, so "sounding them out" would be unproductive. Also, a good reader really can’t afford the time to dwell on too many words, or he may lose the speed and fluency necessary for determining the author’s message.

High frequency words are the words that appear most often in printed materials. Learning to recognize high-frequency words by sight is critical to developing fluency in reading.
